Die Handschwingen der Rauchschwalbe sind dunkelbraun mit einem blauen metallischen Schimmer auf der Außenfahne und dem oberen Teil der Innenfahne. Dieser Glanz unterscheidet sie von der etwas kleineren Mehlschwalbe. Die Steuerfedern sind relativ gleichmäßig schwarzbraun gefärbt mit einer rein weißen Einkerbung in der Innenfahne (außer der S1), welche recht rechteckig oder zur Spitze zulaufend ausgeprägt sein kann. Die S6 besitzen verlängerte Schwanzspieße. Juvenilen Vögeln fehlt dieser Spieß. Die S6 ist zwar auch bei diesen Vögeln die längste Steuerfeder jedoch relativ gesehen deutlich kürzer als bei adulten Vögeln. Weibliche Vögel besitzen tendentiell kürzere Schwanzspieße. Extreme Ausprägungen lassen eine Geschlechtsbestimmung anhand dieses Merkmals zu. Außerdem sind die weißen Felder in den Steuerfedern bei Weibchen meist kleiner und fehlen auf der S2. Nach Busching haben die GrAd juveniler Rauchschwalben unscheinbare weiße Säume. Beleg #233 und #232 zeigen jedoch, dass sich diese Säume sehr schnell abnutzen und dann kaum noch erkennbar sind.

Allgemeines zu Schwalben

Die Handschwingen sind in Relation zu den Armschwingen stark verlängert. Die H10 ist stark verkleinert und erreicht nur etwa ein Sechstel bis ein Viertel der Größe der H9 (im Gegensatz zu Seglern (Apodiformes), welche eine voll entwickelte H10 besitzen. Die GrHd folgen in ihrer Form den Handschwingen. Die Armschwingen sind relativ gleich lang (Maxima bei der A1 und der A6) und im oberen Teil des Kiels eingekerbt. Die Steuerfedern sind gegabelt, das bedeutet die S1 ist kürzeste, S6 längste Steuerfeder.
