Die Felsentaube ist die Wildform der Straßen- oder auch Haustaube (Columba livia forma domesticus). Neben der Wildfärbung gibt es durch die Zucht in menschlicher Obhut unzählige Mutationen bzw. Rassen, welche hier nicht weiter beschrieben werden. Als wichtigste Färbungsvariante wird an dieser Stelle die Wildform der Felsentaube angesehen.

Die Handschwingen sind steingrau mit einer leichten Aufhellung der Innenfahnenbasis. Die Spitze ist verschwommen dunkelgrau abgedunkelt. Die Armschwingen zeigen eine ähnliche Färbung. Die dunkle Spitze wird proximal jedoch blasser und weicht einem schwarzen Feld im oberen Teil der Außenfahne. Auf den Schirmfedern erstreckt sich dieses Feld über beide Fahnen. Dieses Feld, welches im gesamten Flügelzusammenhang ein Band ergiebt findet sich auch auf den GrAd. Die Steuerfedern sind mittelgrau gefärbt mit einer schwarzgrauen Subterminalbinde und einer etwas helleren Terminal- bzw. Endbinde. Die Steuerfedern sind jedoch deutlich kleiner und vorallem kürzer als bei der Ringeltaube (Columba palumbus). Die Außenfahne der S6 ist meist heller grau gefärbt.

Neben dieser Grundfärbung gibt es auch wilde Vögel, welche jedoch durch Kreuzungen mit Rassetauben aus Zucht verschiedene Hybridfärbungen bilden. So ist auch Beleg #1283 keine reine wildfarbene Felsentaube. Felsentauben in der ursprünglichen Färbung sind mitlerweile recht selten geworden und lassen sich durch das Variationsspektrum auch nicht sicher bestimmen. Durch Ausschlussverfahren der deutlich weniger variierenden heimischen Taubenarten lässt sich die Felsentaube bzw. auch Straßen- oder Haustaube relativ gut in Rupfungen bestimmen.
